Apple teases iOS 18 by promising groundbreaking improvements in its ‘biggest’ update yet

Apple has iPhone users excited as it teased its ‘biggest’ update ever to its operating system: iOS 18.

The iOS 18 upgrade is expected to drop from 10-14 June, during its World Wide Developers Conference.

Updates include more customizable Home Screen design functions, allowing iPhone users to add blank spaces, rows, and columns between apps.

Per Apple-related news site, MacRumors, generative AI in built-in apps are also expected – including a potential partnership with Google’s AI bot Gemini.

A Gemini partnership would allow users of newer iPhone models to create images and write essays based on simple prompts.

Other AI apps include large language models (LLMS) and a generative AI app called iWork.

Apple Maps will boast custom route options, allowing on-the-go users to select routes they want to travel rather than limiting them to pre-selected options that Apple has provided.

In addition, there will also be a hearing aid mode for AirPods Pro users and a new AI-powered version of Siri, enabling the uniquely-voiced digital assistant to provide more accurate responses to queries.

Apple’s Messaging app will also be incorporating AI to ‘field questions and auto-complete sentences,’ per Bloomberg.

But there is a catch, as those features only work with iPhones which have a muscular A12 Bionic chip.

Translation: it excludes the iPhone 8 Plus and earlier models.

The first generation of the lower-cost iPhone series SE (Special Edition) line (introduced in 2016) will also be left in the cold.

Slower processors and less memory means these iPhone models won’t be compatible with the high-powered features that come with iOS 18 software.

Sadly, it’s expected this will be the case with future iOS updates, too.

Apple’s A12 Bionic chip was first included in the 2018 iPhone XR and XS models.

Second and third generations of the iPhone SE models as well as all iPhones in the 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 model lines will benefit.

While Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company promised extensive support for a wide range of iPhones, ensuring that many users can benefit from iOS 18.
