This is the $500,000 watch that was stolen from F1 driver Carlos Sainz

It’s only gone and happened again.

Someone has attempted to steal another F1 driver’s watch after a race in Italy.

Carlos Sainz is the latest victim, almost losing out on his Richard Mille watch after thieves made off with it.

Luckily, the Spaniard and his team managed to stop the brazen duo closeby and handed them over to the police.

Sainz is one lucky boy, because the timepiece in question is a Richard Mille RM 67-02 Alexander Zverev edition.

Now, unless you’re a watch aficionado, that probably means very little, so we’ll bring you up to speed. 

Taking things to the extreme seems to be the mantra at Richard Mille.

The Swiss watchmaking brand is perhaps most famous for outrageous price tags, but the engineering behind their pieces is equally impressive.

The Richard Mille RM 67-02 is the perfect example.

Made with high-tech ultra-light materials, it’s an automatic watch that, including the strap, weighs a scant 32 grams.

As a result, the RM 67-02 has become the timepiece of choice for many top athletes, including Carlos Sainz.

The RM 67-02 Alexander Zverev edition has a grade 5 titanium dial decorated in the colors of the German flag (fyi, Zverev is a German tennis player).

Water resistant to just 30m, it also features a dark slate case coupled with a bright red strap.

The 38.7mm wide case is made out of ultra-light, strong carbon quartz TPT and the screws used to secure the case are grade 5 titanium, too.

To keep the weight down to the absolute minimum, even the bridges used for the movement within are made out of carbon quartz TPT and titanium.

The rotor is carbon quartz TPT but lined with white gold to ensure winding effectiveness.

The movement is extensively finished with hand-beveled bridges, hand-polished jewel sinks, satin-finished surfaces, rhodium-plating circular finishing on the wheels, and more.

So, now for the all-important bit – the price tag.

It’s little wonder Sainz was quick to chase after the thieves, as his particular RM 67-02 Alexander Zverev edition is reportedly worth half a million dollars.

We’re not entirely sure why it’s worth that much, as if you hop onto Chrono24, there’s one listed unworn with box and papers for less than $300,000.

Perhaps there’s something particularly exclusive about his watch, not just the fact it’s owned by an F1 driver.
