Super-rare $5.36m Ferrari is the most expensive car EVER sold online

A Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta has become the most expensive car ever sold in an online auction after a lucky buyer picked it up for an incredible $5.36 million.

The bidding was fierce on the always entertaining live auction site Bring a Trailer, with plenty of interest in the 2017 model with only 259km (161 miles) on the clock.

It is the iconic Rosso Corsa red color, with matching brake calipers.

Inside it is all black leather with some stunning red splashed in.

And while it set a record for an internet sale, it’s not even the most expensive LaFerrari ever sold.

A LaFerrari Aperta was auctioned for $10 million in 2017, it was the last ever made.

Why is the LaFerrari Aperta so expensive?

The Aperta is incredibly rare, only 210 of them were made.

And nine of those were reserved for the Ferrari 70th Anniversary celebration.

To get one you basically needed an invitation to buy it from Ferrari themselves.

You couldn’t rock up to a showroom and buy one off the floor, you had to be vetted as being worthy of owning a piece of motoring history.

So how does Ferrari deem you worthy?

We’re not entirely sure but apparently, you need to have already owned another special edition Ferrari like the F40, F50, Enzo or 288 GTO.

If you own all of the above, I’m sure you could get your hands on an Aperta.

Even the name tells you how exclusive these supercars are, LaFerrari translates from Italian to English as ‘The Ferrari’.

Basically, this is THE Ferrari.

Aperta is Italian for ‘Open’.

That’s the removable roof, which is incredibly awesome.

Give me the nitty-gritty details of the specs!

This is for the hardcore fans out there who want to know what the mid-engine V12 in the Aperta is all about.

The Aperta (Italian for ‘open’) was launched in 2016 as the open-top version of the LaFerrari, and it has a removable hardtop made from carbon fiber.

The top speed for the 6.3L engine is a hair over 349km/h (217mph) and a 0-100km/h time of 2.4 seconds.

It has a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The original price was about $1.5 million.
