The record for most miles on a one-person owned car was set by a Volvo driver who drove 3,200,000 miles

This Volvo P1800 set a record that’s unlikely to be beaten.

The owner of this Volvo P1800 drove it for over 3.2 million miles, setting a potentially unbeatable world record.

Not only has this car driven so many miles, but it has also driven them with the same owner.

The car was purchased new in Long Island, New York, on June 30, 1966.

Irv Gordon, a teacher, bought it new for $4,150, which – back then – was roughly the same as a year’s salary.

According to Volvo, he bought it on Friday and by the following Monday, he’d already done 1,500 miles.

This Volvo P1800 has over 3.2 million miles but only one owner

The record that this Volvo P1800 holds is virtually unbeatable for the combination of two factors.

One, it is going to be difficult for any modern car to reach 3.2 million miles (5.14 million km) without falling apart.

Two, even if it happens, it almost certainly won’t be with the same owner.

In 1987, he reached one million miles, and in 2002, he hit two million miles.

By 2013, he’d already reached 3 million miles and by the time Gordon passed away in November 2018, the car had racked up 3.2 million miles – 3,260,257 miles, to be exact.

Even though this is the only car Irv Gordon bought with his own money, it wasn’t his only car.

As a way to thank him for staying loyal to the brand, Volvo gave Gordon a new car for each ‘seven-figure’ anniversary.

When he hit a million miles, Volvo gave him a 780 coupe, and when he reached three million miles, they gave him a Volvo XC60.

Even though the P1800 remained his daily driver, he also drove those cars.

Amazingly, he even managed to somehow put 450,000 miles on the 780 as well.

This guy seriously had places to be.

The world’s highest mileage vehicles

The list of world’s highest mileage vehicles features almost exclusively cars built between 1960 and 1990, probably because cars were too brittle before then, but they became too complicated after.

There are exceptions, though.

Several trucks can easily reach one million or more.

Great care and frequent maintenance are important but, at the end of the day, some cars are simply better than others when it comes to reliability.

It is relatively easy to run a Ford or Chevy truck, or a Volvo or a Mercedes sedan from the 1990s or 2000s for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Good luck doing that with a Wankel-powered Mazda RX-8 or a Lotus.
