This is the story of an extremely rare supercar called Devon GTX, and it started with optimism but finished off with huge disappointment.

Only two examples of this supercar exist — both of them disappeared for 12 years before one finally surfaced on eBay in 2022.

Its inception involves the fan-favorite Dodge Viper and a ray of hope to be one of America’s best supercars ever.

But then again, you never know what happens next — and the Devon GTX faded only because of bad timing.

A super rare supercar with big ambitions

It all started back in 2008 when Devon Motorworks had an idea to build the next big American supercar.

Chrysler had then just abandoned the 8.4-liter V10 engine from the Dodge Viper, and wanted to sell its rights.

Interestingly, Devon was the only company that showed interest, but Chrysler wanted double what Devon offered.

Further negotiations took quite a while, and it was during the Great Depression, so both companies couldn’t complete the deal.

During that short time, the automaker produced two prototypes, which are the only two Devon GTX models still in existence.

The initial plan, however, was to send out around 40 units each year.

The Devon GTX couldn’t hit the road with the deal out of the picture.

Although it wasn’t a successful project, that didn’t mean the GTX wasn’t a capable car.

The Devon GTX had potential

If you’re an enthusiast, you would know how the Viper engine performed — and Devon managed to beef it up further.

The GTX version of the Dodge Viper engine sent out an increased 650 horsepower, which paired well with the supercar standards at the time.

These prototypes were also endangered species, and they disappeared into the unknown for more than a decade.

That was until 2022 — an eBay listing popped out of nowhere — where someone was selling their Devon GTX.

It was also serial number one, which the seller claimed they bought in an auction in 2012.

While we don’t know what happened next, it’s probably sitting in someone’s garage and is a reminder of what the rare supercar could be.
