2700hp Ford GT going at 310mph is faster than a plane taking off

A street-legal Ford GT hit a record speed of 500km/h (310.8 mph) on a Space Shuttle landing strip – and the footage is an incredible display of power.

The 2006 supercar modified car was the fastest ‘old car’ in the world – or at all – during the 2022 display.

The mid-engine coupe was modified by performance car builder, Johnny Bohmer.

Bohmer’s project was sponsored by TV’s Gas Monkey Garage, owned by Richard Rawlings.

His Ford GT, nicknamed the BADD GT, was modified to have over 2,700 hp pumping through its twin-turbocharged V8.

The Ford GT had previously set a standing-mile acceleration record at 454.2 km/h (282.232 mph) in 2012, but has been continually updated.

This is massive for the modified Ford GT compared to the stock GT’s 550 hp engine, which allowed it to reach an electronically limited top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).

Bohmer was actually using the street legal GT as his daily runaround – despite its massive power.

In fact, it was Bohmer himself behind the wheel of the Ford GT for the record on the Space Shuttle landing strip.

The feat was achieved on a retired, nearly three-mile-long landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center.

It was an unmodified production spec engine in a Bugatti Chiron that previously set the highest street legal car speed at 490.5 km/h (304.77 mph).

“We’ve been blown away by the capabilities of this car,” said Gas Monkey Garage owner, Richard Rawlings.

“Johnny and I are committed to showing the world the kind of speed that this car can achieve and feel we can create records that will last for years.”

No record keeping authority like Guinness was involved in the effort.

However the video above shows Bohmer’s video evidence of the speed and collected data from four different devices to verify authenticity.

Bohmer might soon be challenging the record to go even faster himself.

“We believe the BADD GT can do much more than break the record,” he said.

“In its current configuration, we have another 500-700 horsepower that we can work with to really boost the top speed.”
