Bizarre ebike runs on hydrogen and takes 3 seconds to refill

With almost all ‘methods of transportation’ getting electrified or moved towards more sustainable fuel options, bicycles aren’t far behind — and this hydrogen fuel cell ebike from HydroRide proves just that.

Dubbed HYRYD, the ebike from the Swiss company is a foldable, sporty, and sustainable bicycle that has a unique quirk up its sleeve.

You can refill the hydrogen ‘tank’ within seconds, so there would be no need to worry about waiting until you have a full tank to complete your morning ride.

HYRYD ebike aims to innovate bicycles

Since this ebike is sustainable, efficient, and easy to ride, it’s almost like a win-win solution for manufacturers and consumers alike.

The current situation with ebikes isn’t really that great, to say the least.

Unlike hydrogen-powered hypercars, ebikes are a bit behind in the sustainable race — until now,

Most of them run on electric Lithium-ion batteries and spend the better part of the week plugged in.

Even this hybrid ebike, which is half bike and half plane, runs on electric batteries.

However, imagine you don’t need to charge one for hours to come and have it ready to ride within seconds.

It now certainly sounds appealing, doesn’t it?

The adoption of hydrogen as a fuel is only increasing, so you can have super-fast top-ups anywhere in your city.

Hydrogen as a fuel isn’t a dead end, yet

Even if you don’t have fuel stations with hydrogen, let’s just say the Swiss company has you covered.

It offers another product in its portfolio called a compact hydrogen generator that you can install in your home.

You put in 200 ml water and get 20 grams of hydrogen in five to six hours.

That won’t be enough to fuel up larger vehicles like this hydrogen-powered train, but just enough to power your ebike.

Further, you can transfer that hydrogen into a canister and replace it with the one on your ebike.

As claimed, the process should take you between 3 to 10 seconds.

To make the process entirely ‘sustainable,’ HydroRide Europe suggests hooking it up to solar power.

On a full tank, the HYRYD has 37 miles (60 km) of range with a top speed of 14 mph (23 km/h).

These bikes are mostly meant for rental companies, so we might see some of them across Europe in the future.
